My Shadow is Gone

Two years is too short.  Less than 2 years ago I rescued Shadow.  (Click here to see his welcome home post.)  He quickly became one of the best dogs I have ever owned.  He truly was my Shadow.  He followed me everywhere. He was always keeping an eye on me.  He barked alerting me of visitors to the farm.  He went on trail rides with me. He slept by my bed every night.

Recently when we would go out to the barn he started checking out the parameter of the property.  I called doing surveillance or making his rounds.  Well this past Thursday, I guess he went to a neighbors house and somehow ingested ethylene glycol, the ingredient in antifreeze for cars. You can read about it here.

Since we had no idea he ingested it we did not catch it in time. His condition worsened all of Friday. By Saturday morning he was having seizures.  We took him to the local emergency animal hospital where they  admitted him and ran blood test.  It was the kidney function tests that enabled the vets to figure out what had happened.  My that time he was in complete kidney failure.  We gave him 24 hours in the hospital to see if the IV fluids and diuretic medications would help kick start his kidneys.  It didn’t.

On Sunday morning we made the incredibly sad decision to let him go.  We picked up his body later that afternoon and buried him on the property. He will be just off the path between the house and the barn.

I miss him so much.  I have had animals almost all of my life and have never been this upset by a passing.

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

We put in a new grate at the front barn door to prevent water from running into the barn. (Thanks to my BF, the WE is actually HE.)  Some of the horses didn’t care.  Some of them were a little scared of this new plastic thing blocking their way, but after some convincing they went over it.  The donkeys were funny though, there was no convincing them as you can see in this video.

Later that evening they did go over it, I wasn’t around to capture the moment but this is what Izzy’s mom said: “So last night they went over it, and it was the funniest thing ever. They stopped and snorted at it, but I was behind them, so they leapt over it like it was a 2′ jump. I’m so mad I didn’t get it!”

To continue the video trend of this post I thought I would share this touching horse blanket commercial.

He thinks my tractor’s sexy

Yes – from Kenny Chesney’s song:

So I am becoming a little more proficient and confident in using the tractor.  I can load up the farm truck with manure with out denting anything.  I can cut the pastures but find it so boring going around in circles.  It is nice to be able to hang out with the BF while doing it.

But really I would rather be here:

Pasture perfect

At long last the conditions are right for their first evening out in the pasture. They are loving every minute of that fresh grass.

I am excited that the weather is behaving and the lesson program is starting to ramp up again.  I have had a few new inquiries and some new students.  I am excited to see my students from last year coming back.

Cuervo gets out for a lesson.  It has been a while and some times he can be a big oaf.  But this time he seemed to enjoy himself and was good for her.

Dobie’s new trick

So this is Dobie’s latest thing.  I get him riled up and then he tries to nicely head butt me. Instead it looks like I trained him to walk on his hind legs.

Day 11: No News

I was speaking to a friend about not having yet received a call from the vet.  She said the old phrase no news is good news.  Well I corrected her and said in Nash’s case no news is not bad news, because I am sure they would call if he had any significant negative changes.

That being said it is Thanksgiving and I did not receive a call from the hospital.  Dr P. is off today, he said that another vet would call me with an update on Nash’s temperature but I didn’t hear from them today.

I am going to visit Nash tomorrow and finally meet Dr P.  So I will have a full update after that.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends.  A couple of pictures of me this morning with my “kids”.  Took a break from doing stall for to take some selfies,

Miss Heather’s Big Day!

Miss Heather's big day!

This past weekend our favorite photographer, Judy Reinford, arranged a holiday photo shoot at the farm with her clients.  She asked if Heather could be used in the family’s photos on location at Golden Spike Farm.  In return the family made a contribution to the Nash fund raising campaign.  It was a wonderful afternoon.  The weather was perfect.  Heather who loves kids was a super star.  She stood, posed and did not move a muscle for 2 hours.  Such a great pony!

Heather is a Welsh Pony used in the my lesson program.  She is getting up there in years, mid to late twenties, but still enjoys having the kids on her back.  She is so patient with them and knows their ability level.  She will not do anything until they are ready for it.  Since she is a white color, she is starting to show signs of skin cancer.  “Melanomas are most common in older grey or white horses; as many as 80% of grey horses will develop them at some point during their lives.” See Common Equine Tumors.  They don’t bother her at all so the vet is just keeping an eye on them for size and spreading.

I got to know Judy when she volunteered her time and services to the Nash Campaign.  Check out the post from May of this year.  She is an amazing photographer who’s pictures make everything seem magical and enchanting.
