It’s a beautiful morning

This morning when I walked out the front door I found Bilbo and Frodo standing on the mound in their pasture. They were looking intently at something. My first thought was they saw a fox. As their instinct is to protect their herd of goats. (This is why they don’t like and chase the dogs.) Instead they were staring at a turkey who was pacing back and forth in the pasture.

Not wanting to miss out on the photo shoot Mugsy, Patches & Elvis came to visit me on the deck rail. Then I look down to see Forrest rubbing against my leg. And of course Piper and Shadow was right there telling me it was time to go feed the horses.

When I tell everyone the number of animals I have on the farm they are usually astounded. But to me they are my life, my dream come true and I couldn’t imagine life without them.

Izzy meets the boys

This weekend we put Izzy out with the geldings for the first time.  She was a big flirt and they all enjoyed running around with her.

Poor Casey

On Friday a large lesion was found on Casey’s neck.  It is a true mystery as to how it got there.  It showed up with and was this bad in about 24 hours.  Today is day 4 and I am pleased to say that thanks to the vet’s aggressive treatment he is getting better.  We still have a little bit to go and he is on stall rest till it heals completely.  I have to give him 4 large shots in the muscle everyday.  I feel so bad giving them to him but he is a great patient!

Another Student Returns

I was so excited last week when my youngest student returned for lessons last week.  Her mom said she was asking all winter long to start riding again.  I was so impressed with what she remembered from last summer.  She was so happy to be back in the saddle again!2013-04-18_17-42-56_577 2013-04-18_17-53-50_637

Save Nash Surgery Fund

Nash is a handsome black Tennessee Walking Horse that I rescued in June of 2011. He was at a horse farm in where the farm owner knows the person that trucks horses to Canada for slaughter.  The truck driver stops at her farm and unloads horses he thinks she can re-home.  To prove to her the horses are quality he gets on them bareback when he unloads them.  If she thinks she can find a home for them she puts the horses in her rescue barn.  She has about 10 rescue horses at a time that are kept in standing stalls.  They are tied up and not able to move or turn around.  As a result from standing for so long the horses ankles swell.

This is the conditions Nash was in when I went to look at him.  They said he was the nicest horse they had in the group but knew nothing of his past nor why he was on his way to Canada.  I took a look at his deep brown concerned eyes and fell in love.  I got on him that day to experience for the first time the wonderful gait (running walk) of the Walker.  Here is my blog post from that day.

It was then that I noticed he had a bump on his lower abdomen.  The farm owner played it off as not a big deal.  When he got to my farm the vet checked him out and told me it was a hernia, in a very unusual spot.  Normally they are around the belly button. The vet said to keep an eye on it and if I gets any bigger it will require major surgery.

Well unfortunately almost 2 years later the hernia has grown to the size causing my vet real concern and I have find a way to fund his surgery.  You see Nash was rescued at the small cost of $600 the surgery will cost $5,000.  I do not have the funds for this.

Here is where Nash’s big heart comes in.  He is the biggest lover of all the horses. He comes up to everyone and is so gentle he licks your hand like a dog.  He loves kisses and hugs.  Really everyone who has met in falls in love with him and they have convinced me to raise funds to pay for the surgery.

At long last a Riding Ring

We have endured the mud for 2 years and I am excited to let you know I finally had a riding ring put in last week!  In two days Tich General Services dug up and leveled the surface then received and spread 6 tri-axles of Screenings. Thanks also goes to the farm’s neighbor and boarder for the use of their heavy machinery.

Last year’s students returns

With the warmer weather and longer days I am excited to see last year’s students returning for lessons.  She did a great job getting back in the saddle and remembered everything.  It’s like riding a bike I said.  After the lesson she and her mom went to say hi to the horses.  Nashy my lover boy really enjoyed the hugs and kisses.

Family fun day on the farm

A few friends and old colleagues came to visit the farm on Sunday.  Their kids loved it. We started out visiting the goats and donkeys.

Then moved on to say hi to the chickens.2013-04-07_13-38-25_363

Then out to the barn to meet the horses.  Casey was so patient while I showed the kids how to brush him and clean out his hooves.2013-04-07_15-51-19_878

Then for the pony rides.  Dads were there for stability and balance.  I simply lead Casey around.  You should have seen the smiles on their faces

Even Roxy (my friends dog) got into the going around in circles.  We almost tripped over her a few times.  As you can see Casey didn’t care at all.

The great day ended with sitting on the tractor.
